Is Organic Meat Really Worth It

Where does non organic meat come from?
99% of all meat at the grocery store comes from a factory farm.

What is a factory farm?

It is basically a large warehouse. That packs animals in so tightly, they can’t move around. Most of these animals don’t see any sunlight, or get to go outside. They are living, standing, and breathing in their own feces. Sometimes the ammonia is so bad from the urine, that it burns the eyes, throats, and skin of the animals. The feces is impossible to completely remove from the animals. So, sometimes it gets mixed in with your food. There is so much disease and illness because of their living conditions. The animals are given huge amounts of antibiotics. And sprayed with large amounts of pesticides. The meat industry wants maximum output with little cost. So the living conditions are horrendous. Quickly get them fat, get them slaughtered and get them sold. The more they sell, the more money they make. They are going to be food, so they don’t treat them like animals. The animals are a product. They are constantly being beat and tortured while at a factory farm. They kill them when they reach a certain weight. To archive that weight, they are fed a diet of corn, grain and other fillers. To plump them up quickly. After they reach the right weight, they are brutally loaded into cramped trailers. Where they travel in the excruciating heat, and freezing cold with no food or water to the slaughter house. If you think they have humane death at the slaughter house. Think again.

I will not be posting any picture the factory farm or the slaughter house in this post. I plan to come back to this post to keep it updated. The way they are mistreated on factory farms breaks my heart. So, I don’t want to keep seeing it. If you would like to see the living conditions for yourself. Feel free to Google Factory farms and animal cruelty. You will be able to find pictures and see videos of the animals being beaten and mistreated. But let me warn you, once you see it, you will never be able to forget it.

Another great video to watch is called Food Inc. It is one of the main reason’s I changed to the organic lifestyle. After watching it, you will never be the same. This movie is currently on Netflix, but I have also seen it at my local library.

Cattle:
Cows that live on a factory farm are severely mistreated. They are branded and castrated without any painkillers. They are not roaming the fields. There rarely is even grass on the property. Instead they are treading through feces. Cows can live up to 25 years of age. But they are being killed as young as one. (veal is killed around 16 weeks) They live mostly outdoors, in the cold, rain, and heat. Without any shelter. They are fed large amounts of grain and corn. To plump them up fast. A cow’s body doesn’t react well to grain and corn. Making them sick with illness for most of their life. When they are brought the slaughter house, they are hung upside down, still alive. From there they go down the conveyer belt getting their throats slit. Which doesn’t always kill the cows. So, they die either while the blood drips out of them, or while they are being dismembered.

Veal:

When a dairy cow gives birth, it’s calf is taken away immediately. If the calf is to become veal they put it in a cage, where it is so tight, they can’t move or turn around. Some get chained up in a tight stall. The less the move the more tender veal meat will be. Instead of drinking their mom’s milk (that is for the humans) They are given formula. And slaughter around 16 weeks.

Chickens:
Chicken’s probably live in the worst condition than any of the other animals. In this country we love our chicken breast. Some people only eat chicken and fish. It’s the go to protein on any diet. The meat industry knows this. Chickens are unnaturally bred to be large and are given drugs and fillers, to ensure their largeness. They are made to grow so large, so quickly that their organs can not keep up and end up failing. Most of them can not walk and their feet become mutilated. Chicken’s can not hold their body up because of their enormous breast, that they keep falling over. They are cramped on the ground in sheds, with no windows kept in the dark to never see sunlight. Keeping them in complete darkness, supposedly keep them calm. They sometimes are de-beaked. Without any pain killers. For the supposed safety of the workers and the other chickens. They live in their own feces and the feces of all the other chickens. There living situation makes them full of illness and disease. A lot of chicken’s die before they reach the slaughter house. After they unnaturally reach a certain weight they are literally thrown by their feet into trucks, to be slaughtered. Chicken’s raised on these factory farms are born and killed usually with in 45 days. At the slaughter house they are chained by their feet, their throat is cut, than they are dipped into boiling hot water. Most of the chicken’s are still alive when they are dipped into the water.

Egg laying hens:
Hens are placed into cramp cages that are stacked on top of each other. They remain their the rest of their life. If the hen on top goes to the bathroom, it falls on all the hens below. When they are bred they never get to sit on their eggs. Or meet their baby chicks. When the baby chicks hatch. The male chicks are immediately killed, because they can not lay eggs. This is done in a conveyer belt, where a worker grabs each male chick and snaps it’s neck.

Pigs:
Pigs are cute creatures. Some say they have the personality of dogs. Ham is eaten to celebrate most holidays, Christmas, Easter etc… We love bacon in this country and put it on everything. Did you ever wonder what the pig had to go through to get the bacon on table? The pig wasn’t treated like Babe or Wilbur. He didn’t have a life of joy rolling around in the mud. Instead he was removed from his mother at 2 weeks old. To be placed in a dark shed, in a tight stall, never allowed outside to feel the sunlight. Pigs like the rest of the animals live in their own feces. They are castrated and have their tails cut off, without pain killers. Pigs in factory farms get illness and disease from their living conditions. Many of them suffer from pneumonia. They get beat often and are shocked with tasers. Many pigs suffer from injuries and end up being crippled. Because of their living conditions most of the pigs can barley walk. Pigs can live up to 15 years. But at a factory farm at 6 months old they are shipped to the slaughter house. On the way to the slaughterhouse many end up dead upon arrival, due to the transportation conditions. At the slaughter house pigs are killed by stunning. Which is basically being electrocuted to death. After this they are placed in boiling water. Most of the time the stunning isn’t done correctly. But they are dipped in the water anyway, without being fully examined to determine if they are indeed dead. It has been said by workers at the slaughter house, that you can hear the pigs squealing as they are being dipped into the water.

Mother pigs:
When a female pig is old enough they are put in a tiny crate where they can’t move or turn around. They never see sunlight or breathe in fresh air. They are constantly being inseminated. After they give birth, their babies are taken away at 2 weeks old. This repeats until the mother pig is about 3 years old, and than they are sent to the slaughter house. Mother pigs and their piglets are brutally abused. There are many, many videos on the web documenting their abuse.

These conditions are NOT rare. All factory farms are like this. If this was the treatment of cats and dogs it would not be allowed to go on. Just because they end up on your plate, does not mean that they don’t deserve a humane life. They feel physical pain. They feel anxiety, fear, and loneliness. This is what happens when you let greed, come before the welfare of animals. Why doesn’t the FDA or the USDA do anything about it? Your guess is as good as mine.

Alternatives:

Go Vegan: The best way to avoid eating antibiotic filled, sick, tortured animals, is to not eat it. If you can go vegan, I commend you, and you would be my hero. I have tried so many times and have been unsuccessful each time.

Buy Organic: . When buying organically, do your research. By purchasing organic food from the grocery store, all it means is the meat had an organic diet, and was not given antibiotics. It does not mean the animal was treated humanely or lived in good conditions. Most organic meat from the grocery store, goes to the same slaughter house as the non organic meat.

Buy your organic meat local. Visit the farm, see how the animals are being taken care of. Do the cows have room to roam? Are the cows grass fed or grain fed? (you want them to be grass fed) Are the stables big and clean? Do the animals have shelter, and access to the outside? Are the animals being over bred? Talk to the farmer and ask him questions. Ask him what he is feeding the animals, and how he kills them? Find out if they get shipped to a slaughter house. Get to know the farmer’s personality and their farming beliefs. Watch how he talks about the animals and how he treats them. It is cheaper to buy meat from a farmer in bulk. Buying a half of a cow or a quarter of a hog, is cheaper than buying it separately by the pound.

Do it yourself:
Like I have stated in the past. It’s so hard to trust anyone, especially in the food industry. If you have the land, think about starting your own hobby farm. It will be cheaper in the long run. And you can be 100% sure that the animals are taken care of the right way. It is my dream to one day have a hobby farm one day. Until than I will be purchasing my meat straight from the farmer.
